A Simple Exercise to Reduce Anxiety

As I step back in to “the world” after my month off social media, I’m more acutely aware of what triggers anxiety for me. My hope is that something here will help you manage your anxiety, overwhelm and emotional burnout.

So let's just open up that dialogue shall we? The firs thing I noticed, as I wrote out notes for this episode, is that I initally wrote “my anxiety” and I realized that implied it belonged to me. Was part of me. w I started off with the statement around if your depression living in the past. And the first thing that I noticed as I wrote these notes for this session today was that I wrote what triggers my anxiety.

What triggers my anxiety and what triggers anxiety just losing the ME has allowed me to divorce myself from any relationship with anxiety and simply to see it as an current experience. 

Sitting in The Silence is Like a Colonic

#1 Embarrassment

When the inner work is “forced” because of breakdown, despair and desperation – we don’t want to share what we’re doing.  There’s a lot of shame about saying I don't have it together all the time.

But you know, there’s plenty of people telling how amazing things are, and not enough people sharing the day to day reality – and I’m prepared to do that.  Because I tried ignoring the daily grief I feel about my dad having incurable cancer; having a traumatic relationship with my daughter that led to me having to ask her to move out and my husband getting diagnosed with a growth in his skull… and that didn’t work out so well. Which is what allows me to write this to you now.

#2 The Superficial Crap Comes Out Easier

Those limiting beliefs and behaviours that you are really aware of, that stuff can exit pretty quickly (although you may have to revisit several times over a period of time) It hasn't been there that long, or it hasn't had that much of an impact on you.

But the stuff that’s been packed away for years, compacted and The third thing is there's going to be a lot of stuff. That's been packed away for years and almost feels like part of who you are. That crap takes a lot more time and pain to get out.

#3 The Most Important Work is After The Colonic

If you don’t want to keep having colonics, or having really painful growth experiences, you MUST commit to the inner work as part of your life. You have to continue to do the work that you've committed to in the silence that you can learn, how to maintain that that state as you come back into what we call reality.

It’s about how do retain that peace? How do you stop propelling yourself into the future where you feel feel anxious?

Suffering is Caused by The Clinging

I recently listened to Ram Dass who shared something from Buddha and that is, “All suffering is causined by clinging”.

It's from clinging to things, definitions, experiences that are making us miserable but we don't know how, or we don't have the courage or we don't have the support to do something different.

Now when I recognize I’m in a state of ‘non-peace’ I sit with the feeling and ask myself, what am I attached to that is causing this emotion within me?

In our business, one attachment we can all have is the NUMBERS. We become expert at emotionalizing our metrics. Our internal peace is being shattered by external factors to which we have attached meaning. And we play this scenario out so many times, we literally learn how to DO these emotions on a daily basis.

You Have The Ability To Change Your Emotional State at Will

You have the ability to change your emotional state at will – when you make it a practice.

Before I tell you what I did, I’d encourage you to listen to Ep.69 of the podcast – about being addicted to NOT feeling. And that the first step is to sit in the silence, to listen WITHOUT adding energy to it, engaging with it, judging it or yourself.

You will have to find a way that works for you. For me, I literally just had to keep reminding myself, it's okay to hear these things. It's okay to feel these things and I'm going to be brave and I'm going to be courageous. And I'm going to like sit in it like a bathtub. Over time, that conversation became more and more quiet.

Think About This

What definitions do you have around your business, success, entrepreneurship, money that are causing suffering? Who would you be without those definitions? What definitions would empower you?

Finally, Try These Four Questions

When you find yourself in an un-peaceful state – whatever emotion/s that may be for you, I want you try Byron Katie’s 4 Questions

  1. Is it true? Yes or No
  2. Is it absolutely true? Yes or No.
  3. Who am I with that thought? So who are you with a thought that you can never make this work? Who are you with a thought that people like you can't be successful? Who are you with the thought that you have to work 18 hours a day and bust your butt and make things really hard If you want to succeed?
  4. Who are you without that thought? For a moment, imagine yourself without that thought and see yourself. how do you feel? How do you show up? What do you look like? What are you doing? And here's the really good thing with that. You, when you do that, who am I with this thought and who am I without this thought, you have instantly time travelled and been witness to and felt another existence in which you are free from the emotional attachment to something else.

If you can do that in that moment, that means you have the ability to do it all the time, but you have to let the other thing go..
