Desperately seeking some SIMPLE ways to be more productive? Then read on. I'm about to show you three habits that highly productive people know AND do to ensure they get the important stuff done, without working crazy hours, sacrificing their health or relationships or losing their mind!
With so many people now working from home, there is no doubt that they are being challenged by previous "unknowns". However, there's a good chance if you're reading this, that you are a small business owner who is used to working from home.
Procrastination and distraction for you then, are merely symptoms of the bigger problem - which is Lack of Decision. As Napoleon Hill wrote,
The great leaders of the world were men and women of quick decision."
"The suspense of indecision drives millions of people to failure."
"Imagination, alone, is not enough to insure success. Millions of people have imagination and build plans that would easily bring them both fame and fortune, but those plans never reach the DECISION stage."
"The man of DECISION cannot be stopped! The man of INDECISION cannot be started! Take your own choice."
You might think you lack clarity, and maybe that is a contributing factor, but as clarity is the gift of courageous action, it is much more likely that your decision not to make a decision is based in the fear of pain.
1. Loss pain - what/who might I lose, if I take action based on this decision?
This could be everything from losing the comfort of certainty (very common), to a deep rooted fear of losing your partner if you 'change too much'. Take a moment to ask your ego what it is scared of losing.
2. Process pain - do I have what it takes to deal with the inevitable pain of growth?
As humans, we are hard wired to avoid pain. Pain is a human construct (be sure to listen to this podcast on how to raise your consciousness to minimise the pain of being human). Can you see how you are holding yourself back because of this?
3. Outcome pain - what if go through all this, and the outcome sucks?
What if the grass isn't greener? What if it doesn't work out; it's worse than it is now or I don't feel the way I thought I would? I know I've been floored many times with this one. Especially when you've been taking a lot of action and you don't have progress yet.
Now you have this awareness you are ready to implement Productivity Habit #1 - Make Decisions.
Have the courage to make decisions based on what's important to you NOW. Here's some questions to help you
In the first Success Series Episode, I talked about Courage and how SIMPLICITY is a courageous choice. (check it out now if you've not done so).
There is NO denying that when you're building your own business there is a lot to learn. But let's be honest.. there's also a great deal of FOMO and energy invested in looking for that "one magic fix". So you end up buying all the courses, downloading all the freebies and now you are overwhelmed with MORE information. Information that you're probably not even utilising or implementing.
It's time to ask this question,
"What MUST I learn, that will generate better/faster results in the areas of my life that I committed to changing right NOW?'.
As a self confessed course junkie, I asked myself this question at the start of the year and here's how simple I made it for myself... for the first 3 months of the year my focus was
1. I need accountability in my health journey. I know it all (I'm a qualified PT and Metabolic nutritionist 😳) but I'm not DOING it. The key skill I needed was accountability and I knew that if I invested £, my skin was in the game. So I bought a nutrition program and it's working!
2. I need to get better at messaging/content so that is what I am committed to. I've gone back to things I have already purchased and have signed up to some free training around content creating. This is my LEARNING priority
3. I want more quality time with my husband. That means I needed to spend less time working. So I hired a VA to do my Pinterest; quit spending energy on growing my Insta and FB page and continue to develop the skill of scheduling out my content wayyyyy in advance. It's a WIP but it's definitely improving.
DEVELOP THE SKILLS THAT MAKE THE DIFFERENCE TO YOUR CURRENT GOALS
Smashing your to-do list every day, no matter how long it takes, is NOT productivity. That's BUSY.
Focusing on to-do lists as a measure of productivity is a habit, fuelled by society's limiting belief that "making money is hard". That working long hours is an admiral trait and that if I do more, eventually, I'll be able to slow down!
The world's High Performers are (scientifically proven) insanely productive but without working 24/7 and without detriment to their health, sanity or relationships. Because of the following:-
Productivity is an energy game, as much (if not more) as it is an action game. It's about setting yourself up for success, on a daily basis. It's about setting the intention for who you will be and how you will show up. It's about managing your time so that you don't work for long blocks of times, "just to get things done", and end up destroying the quality of your work; increasing your stress and actually reducing your productivity because you're "working at half mast".
You've heard of the book "Eat That Frog", right? If not, I'm sure you've heard about eating the elephant? Basically, it's about getting the hard stuff done first and then the day can only get better!
Unfortunately, for many small business owners, they take this as instruction to get up and get to work. But that is a recipe for failure. When things get a little tough, when the crocodiles start snapping at your heals and the ego starts to talk, you'll be susceptible to self sabotage.
Will you imagine, just for a moment that dedicating your morning to a robust morning routine, is like sitting atop a gigantic pillar for the rest of the day. The crocodiles may still be there, but you've elevated your energy and mindset by prioritising YOU. The INPUT!
You can strengthen this with nutritious food; hydration; time blocking; energy rituals (I'm giving you some of these in another episode so make sure you are subscribed to the channel and you've hit the 🛎 for ALL notifications)
I would also highly recommend an evening routine/ritual because in my humble opinion, the quality of our day starts the evening before. Some ideas for you include bedtime yoga; reading; gratitude journal; hot bath; meditation AND making sure you house/office/family are all set for the following day (more on this coming up!)
