Why you should goal set on feelings not things

Every New Year’s, we come up with our to-do lists, resolutions, bucket lists, and strategic plans — all the stuff we want to have, get, accomplish, and experience outside of ourselves. And here’s the heart of it all: All of those aspirations are being driven by an innate desire to feel a certain way.

So what if this year, we get clear on how we actually want to feel within ourselves, and then we design our to-do lists, set our goals, and make our resolutions?

How do you want to feel when you wake up on January 1st?
How do you want to feel when you look at your schedule for the week?
When you get dressed in the morning?
When you walk through the door of your studio or your office?
When you pick up the phone?
When you cash the check, accept the award, finish your masterpiece, make the sale, or fall in love?

Try this exercise

The Desire Map is an entire curriculum and experience, designed to help you access (perhaps for the first time), the feelings that underlay each one of your goals. 

What does that car really mean to you? Success? Abundance? Speed? Celebrity?

How about clearing that credit card? Expansion? Explosive joy? Freedom?

Think about the financial goals you have? What feelings are you looking for? Independence? Leadership? Beacon of possibility? ...

Seriously, this work is sooo powerful. I introduced 3 women to this on my recent retreat and one of them actually tore up her whole year plan and started again!

I'd love for you to give this a go.. so grab this free download and work in one of two ways.

Decide how you want to feel first.. go through all the words and circle the ones that jump out at you. Then see if you can group them and decide on one word that really sums up that whole group. Do this until you have 3-5 Core Desired Feelings. Then all you need to do is think about the "things" that will help you activate those feelings.. daily preferably. 

Or... you could look at your goals list and dig in to the feelings you are looking to feel by achieving them. You may be surprised and start to change your mind about a few things.
